Television Safe Zone
Television Safe Zone
The safe zone is the area in the center of the slide frame, outside of which the picture may be cropped on some TV screens.
Televisions that use a CRT (glass tube) tend to distort the picture around the edges of the screen. For this reason, the edges are hidden behind a plastic bezel and the picture is overscanned to take advantage of the full viewing area. As a result, the edges of the original picture fall outside of the viewing area. This has been the case since the beginning of television, and broadcast programming is created with this limitation in mind. While every make and model is slightly different, the generally accepted rule is that images should be confined to the center 90% of the screen and titles (text) to the center 80%.
For LCD / Plasma
This is not a concern for newer LCD and plasma screens. However, if you are creating a DVD that will be played on a standard TV, it's a good idea to use the safe zone as a guide when creating your slide show.
How to use the safe zone
When working with any slide in the Slide Options dialog, notice the shaded gray area around the edges of the preview. This is the safe zone area (set to 10% x 5% by default).
You should position your images and captions (including motion effects) with the expectation that the areas outside the safe zone may not be visible on some screens. (Note: the shaded border will not actually appear in the final output. It is only there as a guide while creating your show.)
You can disable the safe zone view, if you wish, by right-clicking the preview area on any screen and selecting Show Safe Zone.
ProShow can automatically scale your images to fit within the safe zone. Simply highlight one or more slides (press Ctrl+A to select them all at once), right-click one of the highlighted slides, and select Scale Image > Fit to Safe Zone. You can also adjust the safe zone size by clicking the <Options> button on the tool bar, selecting the <Show Options> tab on the left, and entering the desired percentages in the spaces to the right.
