How to Put a ProShow on Your Website

How to Put a ProShow on Your Website

Overview

Using ProShow Gold or Producer, you can create a slide show that can be displayed on your web site. Online slide shows are viewed using the Photodex Presenter plug-in, which is included with all ProShow products, or available as a free download from the Photodex web site.

Creating The Web Show

Once you have created your slide show in ProShow Gold or Producer, click the Web Show icon in the tool bar at the top. On the dialog that appears, configure any additional shows and menus just as you would when creating a DVD or other type of output.

Click the Output Options tab on the left and check the box labeled Create Web Page in the lower right. Click Create at the bottom, and enter a file name and location when prompted. To avoid problems later, use only lower case letters, numbers, dashes (-) or underscore characters (_) in the file name. Avoid spaces and other punctuation characters. Save the file in a folder where you can find it later. This is the actual web show file that you will need to upload to your web site.

HTML

In order to display your slide show on your site, it must be embedded within a web page. Checking the Create web page box as described above will generate a basic web page automatically. The file will be created in the same location that you specified for the web show file, and will have the same file name.

If you are familiar with HTML and would like to edit the web page yourself, you can leave the box unchecked and just click the View HTML button next to Create at the bottom. This will generate the necessary code, which you can copy and paste into your HTML editor.

Putting It All Together

Once you have created your web show file and the web page that will display it, you need to upload both to your web server. Make sure that both files are uploaded to the same directory on the server. For this example, assume that your web show and HTML files are called "myshow.px" and "myshow.html," respectively, and you have uploaded them to "www.mywebsite.com" in the top level directory. Pointing your web browser to the address "http://www.mywebsite.com/myshow.html" should display your slide show.

Troubleshooting Problems

If you try to view your show and instead see a gray "playback complete" screen, there are several possibilities. This problem occurs when the web show (PX) file is not found on the server in the location that you specified in your web page. This most likely means that your PX file has not been uploaded to the server, or has been placed in a separate directory from the web page that references it. It can also occur if the PX file has a different name from the file name specified in your web page. Remember that most web servers are case sensitive, so capitalization makes a difference in file names. Finally, if you have placed your web page in a password-protected directory, the web show will not be able to function properly.

To resolve this problem, make sure that your PX file and web page are uploaded to the same directory on your web server. You can test this by entering the direct link to the PX file in your browser's address bar (e.g., "http://www.mywebsite.com/myshow.px"). If your browser responds with a "file not found" error message, it means that your PX file isn't present at that location or the file names doesn't match what you typed. Ideally, your browser should prompt you to download the PX file.

Though uncommon, in some cases the web server may need to be configured to handle PX files correctly. If you typed in the address of your PX file as described above and received a page full of gibberish characters rather than a download prompt, this may be the cause of the problem. In this case, you will likely need to contact your web hosting service and request that the following custom MIME type be added to your server configuration:

AddType application/octet-stream .px
You can send this information to your web hosting service (or refer them to this page). Your hosting service should be able to easily accommodate this request, and may even offer a control panel that allows you to configure it yourself.

If you are still encountering problems, please contact us using the contact form at the link below. Please provide as much specific information as possible, including the URL of your web page and the results of any troubleshooting steps that you have already taken.
