What is Photodex Presenter?

The Photodex Presenter plug-in is a free add-on for your web browser which allows you to view ProShow slide shows over the web. Using Presenter, you can view a show created with ProShow Gold or ProShow Producer in a streaming web format. FAQ

Why does 'About Photodex Presenter' appear in the menu?

If a user right clicks on the Presenter plug-in, one of the menu options is 'About Photodex Presenter.' This is required, and cannot be removed.

While Photodex recognizes the need of professionals to promote their brand, we must include this option for several reasons:

  • Users should be able to find out who publishes any plug-in that gets installed on their computer.
  • Users should be able to contact the publisher of a plug-in for technical support and assistance.
  • Photodex must provide a copyright notice for applications we publish.
  • Photodex must provide trademark notices for our trademarks.
Including an 'About' item in the right-mouse menu is common practice, and exists in plug-ins produced by most publishers (such as the Adobe® Flash® plug-in).

In today's world of exploits and viruses, no responsible publisher would ask a user to install software which does not provide an easily identifiable way to locate the publisher.

What Photodex branding appears in Presenter?

With newer versions of Presenter, Photodex has removed the Photodex logo from the control bar, and has replaced the standard loading and buffering screens with a generic style. The only Photodex mentions appear in the following places:
  • Install and uninstall screens (required to notify the user of what they are installing and who publishes it)
  • 'About' option in the right-click menu
  • Update notification displayed when the plug-in must be upgraded

Can the Presenter download be placed on my server?

No. In order to protect users from malicious downloads, web browsers use 'code signing' to ensure that plug-ins are being delivered from the actual publisher in an unmodified form. This code signing requires that the signed download be delivered from the website registered with the publisher. This code signing and the requirements it puts in place are industry standards and are not under the control of Photodex.

What about 'presenter.js'?

Presenter.js is a file, pulled from the Photodex servers, that simplifies the process of putting a show on a web page. It is certainly possible to place a show using the Presenter plug-in on your site without using this. However, you would need to be familiar with advanced HTML and ActiveX embedding. This is outside of the scope of what Photodex can provide technical support for.

Presenter.js is copyrighted by Photodex, and cannot be placed on your server. However, you may download the presenter.js file and use it as a road map for creating your own scripts or code to embed the Presenter plug-in. Just be sure not to copy any of the code found in presenter.js. Use it only as a guide. To download presenter.js, copy the URL for the .js file from the HTML source, paste it into the address bar of your web browser, and save the resulting page as a '.js' file.

Is my show playback dependant on the Photodex servers being live?

Yes, because code signing requires that the plug-in be delivered from our servers. This is true of any plug-in that uses code signing to deliver a safe plug-in (such as the Adobe® Flash® plug-in). Even if you have avoided using presenter.js by writing your own code, the plug-in simply cannot be downloaded from anywhere except our servers.

Photodex Corporation has been in business since 1987. We are not going anywhere soon.

Adobe and Flash are either registered trademarks or trademarks of Adobe Systems Incorporated in the United States and/or other countries.
