Biography
How did you get the idea for Oregon Trails?
Well, I'm not a wedding photographer, so I knew I needed a pretty unique "celebration" to be able to compete. As luck would have it, I had a vacation planned to Oregon during the Sesquicentennial Celebration year. On our first day driving up the spectacular Columbia River Gorge, I commented that it was pretty obvious why the pioneers were so anxious to get to the Oregon Territory. Of course, the irony was we were heading east instead of west, and the idea of "Oregon Trails" was born.
What is your favorite Oregon Trails picture? Why?
That's a tough question. Oregon is so varied. It's a photographer's playground and it's almost impossible to take a bad picture. But I guess I'd have to say it was Odell Lake, in the Cascade Lakes region (not sure why, but it seemed to resonate with me)!
Where do you get the inspiration for the interesting effects you create in your slide shows?
I wanted the show to capture the enthusiasm I experienced while in Oregon. Additionally, the beauty of the state just seemed to jump right out at me, so I looked for techniques and effects that would convey that feeling. I really wanted someone to watch the show and say, "I'm going to Oregon!" Oregon is so multidimensional, with peaks towering above, or falls cascading from great heights, to endless horizons and amazing depths and contrasts. I tried as best I could to bring these dimensions to life in the effects while maintaining balance and harmony.
Is there anything else you would like to share with other ProShow users?
Putting together sideshows has made me a better photographer. I was not very creative when I was just pasting photos in an album, but now I try to frame differently so the photos will work in a show or story line. Ultimately it makes taking pictures a lot more fun and much more purposeful. Oregon simply made it easy.
