Executive Profile

Paul Schmidt - President, Founder

Paul Schmidt is the founder and President of Photodex Corporation. Since 1987, Paul has managed all aspects of the company including strategic planning, software development, and executive management. Schmidt got his start in the technology field, and has since gained a wealth of knowledge in the business world, he knows the importance of hands-on executive involvement in the day-to-day operations of a company.

Schmidt first made a name for himself when he developed a multi-user accounting system and then a CAD/CAE system, which has since become an industry standard for volumetric earthwork calculation using digital terrain modeling. He is also credited with developing Reference File for Reference Software, later acquired by Word Perfect. Schmidt even had time to make significant contributions to the video gaming world. His work for Maxis, a video game publisher (now wholly owned by Electronic Arts), include SimEarth® and A-Train® both top 10 selling games and sales record holders.

Other considerable advancements that Schmidt has forged in the technology world include the development and implementation of hardware protection devices for software (“hard-locks” or “dongles”) and industrially hardened touch screen systems for automated machine control applications on large earth-moving equipment; all of which is currently in use worldwide in mission critical environments. Also credited to his expertise is the development of the first DOS thumbnail viewer (GDS), a market that Photodex continues to support with the most advanced content imaging programs available.

For the past 18 years and throughout all of his technical achievements, Schmidt has commanded the direction of Photodex Corporation and continues to do so today. Capitalizing on extensive experience, Schmidt moved Photodex into mainstream multimedia tools. He developed Picture Factory®, a series of content CDs implementing Photodex’s ClickSearch® product, one of the only thumbnailing browsers available for DOS, Macintosh, and Windows in the early 90’s. As he was pioneering the technology and software markets, he was also implementing groundbreaking methods of business management. His company was among the very first to employ the now popular “trial software” model, setting the standard in customer-first software.

Schmidt maintains his critical role at Photodex by remaining very involved in all aspects of the company, focusing on development and revolutionizing software. Schmidt knows the importance of hands-on management and is dedicated to his business as well as his customers. He remains on a personal level with his customers by frequently attending trade shows to answer questions, gather ideas, and research how to make his products better.

Schmidt considers the ProShow line to be some of his most important work to date. ProShow has become a focus of Photodex’s future development efforts, and Schmidt is committed to taking this software above and beyond the expected. The award winning ProShow line has sustained popularity due to its ease of use, unmatched quality, and brute-force speed and will continue to dominate the industry as it evolves.
